Key Takeaways: What Is Airalo eSIM & Is It Good to Use?

  • Airalo provides eSIM cards — a digital alternative to physical SIM cards — for international travel.
  • Airalo offers data-only plans, but some packages let you make texts and phone calls too.
  • Based on our experience, Airalo is user-friendly and affordable with broad coverage, but its customer support could be faster.

Top Use Cases for Airalo eSIM

  • Avoid roaming fees: Travel eSIM providers like Airalo offer pay-as-you-go data plans, so you don’t rack up hefty roaming fees with your usual mobile network carrier when abroad.
  • Convenience: Instead of purchasing a local SIM card, you can buy an eSIM plan via an app and manage everything there. You can also install multiple plans and switch between them without physically removing anything from your device.
  • Flexibility: Airalo sells regional and global plans. These plans cover several countries, so you don’t have to buy one for each country. However, if you plan to visit only one country, Airalo caters to that too.

Airalo — which offers data, calls and texts plans — graces many best travel eSIM roundups you’ll find online, but whether or not it’s the best choice for you depends on several factors. If Airalo is on your radar, check out our Airalo eSIM review to help you decide if it’s worth it.

Travel-oriented eSIM carriers are designed to make data usage abroad more flexible and affordable for globetrotters. While these providers are similar in many ways, each comes with unique pros and cons to suit different situations, so it can be challenging to pick between them.

We purchased a Europe eSIM package from Airalo to test out its key features while evaluating its user-friendliness and customer support. We’ll also take a detailed look at its pricing, and share a handy guide on installing and activating Airalo for the first time, so stay tuned.

What Is Airalo eSIM & Who Is It For?

Airalo is one of the most prominent travel eSIM services, offering data-only plans as well as data, calls and texts packages to those with eSIM-compatible devices. The service covers more than 200 countries, with a variety of plans for each location. It has hubs in Singapore, Toronto and Istanbul, and its user base is over 10 million according to Airalo’s March 2024 data

Kit is an experienced technical writer with knowledge on streaming, digital privacy and eSIMs.

Airalo has many strengths, including affordability, user-friendliness and its data, calls and texts plans, which not all eSIM providers offer. On the other hand, I found its customer support to be slow. This could be frustrating if you have a similar experience when you touch down in a new country.

Airalo eSIM Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • User-friendly app
  • Data, calls & texts plans
  • Over 200 countries covered
  • Unlimited plans in select countries
  • Free welcome eSIMs for select countries

Cons:

  • No day plans
  • Slow customer support

How Does Airalo Work?

Airalo lets you subscribe to data-only or data, calls and texts packages in different countries and regions via the Airalo app. Purchasing and setting up an eSIM plan is very straightforward.

Airalo works with eSIM-compatible devices only, but most recent phone models support eSIMs. Unlike a physical SIM, you purchase and manage your Airalo eSIM plan remotely via the internet — there’s no need to insert anything into your phone. This provides travelers with an extra layer of convenience and security.

User-Friendliness & Hands-On Testing

95 % – Excellent

We have no complaints about the Airalo app layout. There are three tabs at the bottom for buying a plan, managing your plans and configuring your account, and the design is simple and uncluttered.

Purchasing a plan and installing it was a breeze, and there are two types of instructions: a written guide and a step-by-step visual guide. The latter is ideal for new users who aren’t the most confident with technology.

How to Install Airalo eSIM

There are three installation methods: direct, manual or via a QR code. On that note, some devices don’t support camera roll scanning, so you might need a second device for display purposes if you choose the QR code option. Also, direct installation may not be possible on all devices.

We installed and activated our data-only Airalo eSIM using the direct method on an iPhone. Once you’ve purchased your Airalo eSIM from the in-app store, follow these steps to install it.

We completed this procedure on an iPhone. The steps and settings for Android will look somewhat different, but the process is similar and Airalo has dedicated guides for Android. In addition, this tutorial is for a data-only plan. If you purchase a data, calls and texts plan, please check the instructions on the “details” page in case they differ slightly.

  1. Open the Installation Guide

Make sure you have an internet connection before starting. Tap “my eSIMs” at the bottom of the app, then select the plan you want to install and tap “details.” On the eSIM’s “details” page, open “view instructions” under “eSIM installation.”

  2. Select “Install eSIM”

On the next page, tap “install eSIM” to start the direct installation process. Alternatively, choose a different installation method at the top. Go to the tutorial below to continue the installation and activation process.

    install airalo

How to Activate Airalo eSIM

After tapping “install eSIM,” you’ll need to follow some prompts to set up and activate Airalo on your device. This is what you can expect from the process.

  1. Allow Activation

When prompted, allow your device to activate your Airalo eSIM. The wording may differ depending on your device; for example, words like “allow” or “download” may appear.

    airalo allow activation
  2. Tap “Continue”

When you see the “activate new eSIM” prompt, tap “continue” twice. After that, tap “done.” Again, the wording and steps might differ on Android.

    activate airalo
  3. Name Your Plan

To help distinguish between your main line and your Airalo plan, you can opt to label each profile. We picked “cellular data” for our Airalo plan, but you can choose anything you want.

    airalo label plans
  4. Set Your Lines

Set your primary line (your usual phone number) as your default line. You can also set this for iMessage and Facetime. Tap “continue.” If you’re ready to use your data, then set your Airalo eSIM as your cellular/mobile plan on the next page. If you’re not at or en route to your destination yet, then you can do this later in the settings (see the next steps).

How to Access Your Airalo Data

airalo access data instructions
The in-app “access data” instructions tell you if you need to adjust certain settings, and provide information about available networks.

Finally, to make sure you can use your Airalo data, you’ll need to follow a few more steps. You can find the “access data” instructions in the “view instructions” tab under “eSIM installation” in the Airalo app (see step 2). You must view the access data instructions to complete some of the steps below. Once you go through these steps, your data should be ready to use.

  1. Check That Airalo Is Your Cellular Line

To access your Airalo cellular data, go into your phone’s “cellular” settings also called the “network & internet” or “connections” settings — and ensure Airalo is set as your cellular data provider. To do this, tap your Airalo plan and activate “turn on this line.” Toggle on “data roaming” for the Airalo plan too.

    airalo turn on cellular
  2. Adjust Network Selection Settings (Optional)

If you want to change networks, go to “network selection” and toggle off “automatic.” Go to the “access data” instructions in the Airalo app to check available networks in your location, then go back and choose one in “network selection.”

    network selection
  3. Turn Off Data Switching

Go back to the “cellular data” tab and toggle off “allow cellular data switching.”

  4. Check APN Settings

Your APN (access point name) is usually set by default. In the Airalo app, check the “view instructions” and “access data” sections to see if you need to update your APN in your device’s “cellular data network” settings.

Preventing Roaming Charges: Extra Tips

When you travel, it’s key to avoid accidentally using your primary line for data as this could rack up roaming fees. Before jetting off, here are some steps you can take to prevent unexpected charges.

  • In the cellular/mobile data settings, toggle off “allow cellular data switching.”
  • Make sure “data roaming” is toggled off for your usual local SIM.
  • Turn on “airplane mode” to prevent network connections.

Airalo eSIM on Mobile: Android & iOS Apps

Airalo supports eSIM-compatible phones, which are mostly models that were manufactured in recent years. These include — but are not limited to — iPhone XR, XS, 11 and higher, as well as various Samsung Galaxy, Huawei and Google Pixel models. Here’s how to check if your phone is eSIM-compatible.

iOS

There are various ways to check if your iPhone is eSIM-compatible:

  • Check for IMEI: Go to “settings,” then select “general” and “about.” If you see an IMEI number when you scroll down, you can use eSIMs. You can also look for the “no SIM restrictions” phrase in the “carrier lock” field.
  • Check for “add eSIM”: Under “settings,” go to “cellular” and look for the “add eSIM” option. If it’s there, your device is eSIM-compatible.

Please note that iPhones purchased in Mainland China and most devices manufactured in Hong Kong and Macao do not support eSIMs.

Android

How you check for eSIM compatibility on Android depends on the phone model. Here are some examples (see Airalo’s guide to view all methods):

  • Samsung Galaxy: Go to “settings,” then “connections” and look for “add eSIM” in the “SIM manager.”
  • Google Pixel: Go to “settings” and open the “network & internet” tab. Click “+” on “SIMs” and look for the “download” option. If you see this, you’re good to go.

Airalo eSIM Coverage: Countries & Regions

90 % – Excellent

For country coverage options, Airalo eSIM offers plans for 205 countries and territories, including both popular travel destinations and less-trodden options.

Airalo eSIM coverage
Airalo covers 26 Caribbean Islands, which is a great option for cruises.

It also has several regional options, each with different GB levels and lengths of coverage: Africa (36 locations), Asia (18 locations), Caribbean Islands (26 locations), Europe (42 locations), Latin America (17 locations), Middle East and North Africa (13 locations), North America (three locations) and Oceania (eight countries).

Finally, Airalo also offers global coverage for 138 countries for data-only or data-call-and-text options. It’s the best eSIM for Japan for this reason.

Airalo eSIM Speed

95 % – Excellent

Airalo eSIM plans typically support 5G, but this depends on your location and your device’s compatibility. You may notice a speed drop in certain locations — remote areas, for example — but this is normal and not an issue related to Airalo itself.

We tested Airalo in France and noticed no issues with lags or buffering, but we were in a city and had no issues getting 5G.

Airalo eSIM Pricing: How Much Does Airalo eSIM Cost?

85 % – Very Good

We’d describe Airalo’s pricing as reasonable: It’s a tad more expensive than providers like Saily but cheaper than providers like Holafly. That said, each service offers something different. In Airalo’s case, it offers a free welcome eSIM for select locations. The tables below show examples of Airalo’s pricing for different plans to give you an idea of what to expect.

Local Data Plans

This table represents the pricing for some of the countries that Airalo covers, including many of its most popular destinations. Please note that the plans marked as “free” are offered as part of the “Free Welcome eSIM” package. You can get a free eSIM only once and for one destination. Unlimited plans are available in a few locations, such as China.

Data, Calls & Texts Plans

Each plan has a limit on the number of texts and calls, which can vary by country. For example, the cheapest U.S. plan comes with 20 minutes and 10 SMS, while the cheapest U.K. plan comes with 10 minutes and 10 SMS. The data, calls and texts plans don’t cover every country individually, but there are global plans for this purpose.

Regional & Global Plans

If you plan to travel to several countries, Airalo has regional plans with bundles of destinations. Regional plans are data-only, but the Discover+ Global plan comes with calls and texts too (see the table above.) This table represents the starting price for each region.

The data limits and validity periods vary by plan. We’ve included the maximum amount of data and validity possible for each region — these do not correspond to the starting prices listed in the table and will be more expensive if selected.

Payment Methods

You can use these methods to purchase an Airalo eSIM:

Airalo also has a rewards system called “Airmoney.” If you collect enough Airmoney from referrals, purchases and top-ups, you can use it to buy packages. If an error on Airalo’s side prevents you from using your plan, there is a refund request period of 30 days.

Airalo eSIM Customer Support

70 % – Decent

Airalo’s customer support options include an in-app chat, WhatsApp chat (more on this below) and a help center that answers common questions related to getting started, troubleshooting and other issues.

Live Chat Support Speed & Quality

If you want to speak to a support agent via the in-app chat or WhatsApp, you have to speak to a chatbot first. If the chatbot doesn’t provide a satisfactory answer, you can select “not really” when asked if it was helpful. You’ll then be given the option to speak to an agent.

Getting an answer to our query via WhatsApp was somewhat slow, especially when compared to Saily. Saily is operated by Nord Security, our top VPN provider recommendation, whose support team was very quick.

In Airalo’s case, when we asked to speak to an agent, it took around 15 minutes to get a response to our query. This could be frustrating if you need to solve a problem quickly after landing at your destination.

Airalo eSIM vs Other Provider Services

Airalo is just one of many travel eSIM providers endeavoring to make physical SIM cards a thing of the past. Let’s take a look at how it differs from a few top competitors.

Airalo vs Nomad eSIM

Nomad eSIM offers data-only plans in over 200 countries. Airalo also serves more than 200 countries, but it has data, calls and texts plans as well as data-only ones. Another difference is that Nomad eSIM offers “day plans” with a minimum of one day, which might be ideal if you want more flexibility. Airalo is cheaper on some plans, while Nomad has better rates on others.

Airalo vs Holafly eSIM

Holafly offers more unlimited data plans than Airalo, but it is more expensive overall. You can also choose the number of days and travelers when you purchase a Holafly plan. Both providers cover more than 200 countries.

Community Feedback: Airalo eSIM Reviews on Reddit & Trustpilot

Netizen reviews for Airalo on Reddit and Trustpilot are mixed. Many found the service easy to use and encountered no issues while abroad. However, some users weren’t so happy with their experiences, citing connection issues and slow customer support. While some people highly recommend Airalo, others say they wouldn’t use it again.

The Verdict: Is Airalo the Best eSIM for International Travel?

On balance, we’d say Airalo is a good travel eSIM with reasonable pricing, and we love that it offers a free welcome eSIM. However, it could improve in some areas — customer support in particular. It’s ideal if you need a data, calls and texts plan, but if you need a plan that’s shorter than seven days, look for a provider with day plans instead.
